The History Of St Fintans Cemetery in Dublin

Fintan's Cemetery is a burial ground located in the Sutton are of Dublin on the south side of Carrickbrack Road.

One Of Ireland's Most Famous Burial Grounds

The cemetery is effectively divided into two separate sections, the old section and the new section. The old section of St. Fintan's contains a lot of atmospheric history, with the ruins of a keeper's cottage and the remains of the historical St. Fintan's Church both standing as long lasting reminders of the cemetery's past.

Further on from the old section is St. Fintan's Holy Well which is still flowing and still visited. The newer section of St. Fintan's is further down the hill and is the section that is more actively used by modern visitors and residents.

Resting Place Of Some Famous Faces

There are a number of notable and famous individuals buried in St. Fintan's cemetery. Some of these names include writers Padraic Colum and Mary Colum, actor and poet Micheál Mac Liammóir, TV and radio host Gay Byrne, businessman Feargal Quinn, 6th President of Ireland Patrick Hillery, 7th Taoiseach of Ireland Charles Haughey and iconic rock musician and former Thin Lizzy front man Phil Lynott.

Care And Attention In A Final Resting Place

When laying a loved one to rest in St. Fintan's cemetery, it is not uncommon for family or friends to also lay down a number of grave ornaments to personalise the burial space.

This is most commonly in the form of a plaque that might contain a special message that loved ones want to be associated with their lost one for eternity. It is a suitable and widely used option to honour the memory of someone that has passed.

The history and culture of Ireland means that burial grounds and cemeteries are a very important and revered location within a city, and St. Fintan's cemetery is just one of many examples across the country of a place that boasts lots of history whilst still being an active, relevant site for the community.
